The Story

Science outran its own guardrails, and someone had to answer for it.

In 2018, the world learned that the first gene-edited human beings had been born in a lab in China. Behind the announcement stood the biophysicist He Jiankui, and behind him a program whose reach extended far past a single clinic. Then he disappeared.

Filmed over three years across the United States and China, often under genuine personal risk, the film follows the researchers who built the technology, the ambitions that drove it, and the reporting that first exposed it. The investigation surfaced the story in 2018 alongside journalist Antonio Regalado of MIT Technology Review, whose account put it in front of the world.

What emerges is less a profile of one scientist than a question about all of us. Who is accountable when the power to redesign human life arrives before anyone has agreed on the rules.
